The church of St. Mary, situate at Howden-le-Wear, in the most populous part, and erected in 1870 at a cost of £1,400, is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, west porch, and a bell cote containing one bell: there are 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1869. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £310, in a gift of the Bishop of Durham and Crown alternately, and held since 1885 by the Rev.
