Church

The church of St. Peter is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and vestry: the western turret was blown down in 1903, and has since been simply replaced by a cross: the north aisle and a large vestry on the south side were added and the church restored in 1891-2, at a cost of £1,200: a south aisle was subsequently added, and the organ rebuilt: in 1905 a memorial window was placed to Mrs. Dorothy Hunter, who died in 1904: in 1909 a new chancel was erected, and during the years 1908-10 six stained glass windows were inserted, one of which is in memory to the reign of H.M. Queen Victoria: there are 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1866. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Samuel Frost. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1914), page 324.]
