The church of St. Cuthbert, erected in 1839, on a declivity on the north side of Shadforth Beck, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the east window is stained: in 1891 the nave was restored and the chancel rebuilt at a cost of £1,950: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a rectory, yearly value £310, including 233 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Willmore Hooper, M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1902), page 332.]

THIS CHURCH was erected in the year 1839 it contains Five Hundred and Five sittings and in consequence of a grant from the Incorporated Society for promoting the enlargement, build ing and repairing of Churches, and Chapels, Three Hundred and Fifty of that number are hereby declared to be free and unappropriated for ever.
