Church

The Parish Church, dedicated to St. John, was erected in 1825, at a cost of £3,339, and is a neat, plain, Gothic structure, with a steeple 148 feet in height. It comprises nave, chancel, and aisles, and contains 1,000 sittings, half of which are free and unappropriated. The church contains several handsome mural adornments. The living is a rectory in the patronage of the Bishop of Durham; gross income, £194. Rev. William Atkinson, rector. Newcastle Courant 16/6/1827 A SERMON will be preached in the New Church upon Gateshead Fell, on Sunday, the 17th Day of June instant, by the REV. GEORGE TOWNSEND, Vicar of Northallerton, and Prebendary of Durham; when a Collection will be made in Aid of the Liquidation of the Debt due from the said Church.
N.B. Divine Service will commence at 11 o'Clock in the Forenoon.

Newcastle Chronicle 9/9/1875 JUBILEE OF ST. JOHN'S CHURCH, SHERIFF HILL.- The jubilee of St. John's Church, which stands on Sheriff Hill, and is seen from the whole surrounding district, was celebrated last evening, when a full choral service was held, and a sermon was preached by the Ven. Archdeacon Prest. The church, which is not lighted with gas, was illuminated with candles.
