The church of St. Mary, erected in 1822 near the site of the old church, founded in the reign of King Egfrid of Northumbria, is a cruciform building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and three bells: there are 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £202, net yearly value £234, with residence, in the gift of Lady Northbourne and Mrs. Drewett alternately, and held since 1877 by the Rev. James Steele.
