Church

St. John's church, originally a chapel of ease, standing on an eminence in a central position from Greenside, Woodside and Crawcrook, and consecrated in September 1857, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western bell-cote containing 3 bells, the gift of John B. Simpson esq. J.P., D.C.L.: in 1907, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the building of the church, the chancel was enlarged, a north aisle added, and a sanctuary built, at a total cost of about £1,500; at the same time a screen was erected in memory of the late John Mowbray esq. of Greenside, and a stained east window was inserted by John Bell Simpson esq J.P., D.C.L. of Bradley Hall: there is a memorial window to Mrs. Robert Thorp, a member of the family of the late Ven. Archdeacon Thorp: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1886. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £330, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Ryton, and held since 1900 by the Rev. George D'eath, of Queen's College, Birmingham. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1914), page 323.]
