Church

The church of St. Paul, erected in 1828, at a cost of £2,500, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles and an embattled western tower, with pinaccles, containing 6 bells, five of which were presented by Robert Belt esq. of Winlaton: all the stained windows are memorials to inhabitants of the parish, including one to Mrs. Wardell, wife of the late rector: there are 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1828. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-change £293, net yearly value £300, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Arthur Jones M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. [Kelly's Directory of Durham and Northumberland (1890), page 430.]
