Church

St. Mary's, Tyne Dock, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1864: the church, erected in 1862, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, vestry, west gallery, west porch and a tower at the north-west angle containing one bell: in 1914 the chancel was extended by the addition of 16 feet, and a commodious choir vestry was built at the west end of the church: there is also a handsome window to the memory of the first vicar and his wife, which was put in by Messrs. Morris and Co. of London: there are 646 sittings, which are free. The register dates from the year 1862. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Thomas Powell Williams M.A. of University College, Durham, and surrogate. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1921), page 343.]
