Church

St. Simon's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed October 29, 1875, from that of St. Mary, Tyne Dock: the church, in Simonside, Tyne Dock, erected in 1880, at a cost of £3,100, consists of chancel and nave under one roof and south porch: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1876. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1908 by the Rev. William Thompson Laverick, of Durham University. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1921), page 343.]
