St. Francis's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1911 from the parishes of St. Mary, Jarrow Docks and St. Jude's, South Shields: the church is a temporary wooden building. The register dates from the year 1911. The living is an incumbency, net yearly value £200, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1917 by the Rev. Hiram Craven B.A. of King's College, Cambridge. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1921), page 343.]
