St. Mark's is an ecclesiastical district, formed February 11, 1873, out of Holy Trinity parish: the church, in Hardwick street, erected in 1874-5, at a cost of £8,000, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles and western narthex: there is a memorial window to the men who fell in the Great War: there are 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1870. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1909 by the Rev. John Henry Woods M.A. of St. Peter's College, Cambridge. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1921), page 343.]
