Church

SOUTH WESTOE is an ecclesiastical parish, formed May 24, 1878, out of St. Hilda's: the church of St. Michael and All Angels, in Westoe lane, Westoe, was built in 1881-2 at a cost of £3,473, and consecrated February 2,1882, and is a structure of brick in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles: the stained east window is a memorial to Alderman Broughton: the organ was in part the gift of Mr Williamson, of Westoe; the cost of the other part, enlarged in 1901, was defrayed by public subscription. In 1895 the church was enlarged by the addition of aisles, at a cost of £2,400, and in 1901 £820 was expended in bulding a new vestry: the church was also fitted with the electric light at the expense of Mrs. Eltringham, in memory of her husband: in 1910 St. Margaret's chapel was added to the structure, the cost being defrayed by an anonymous donor: there are now 626 sittings. The register dates from the 1882. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1910 by the Rev. William Peter Mayor M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge, and surrogate. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1921), page 343.]
