Church

St. James's, erected in 1867 and 1868 at a cost of £6,000, is a beautiful building, after the Early French Decorated style, and has chancel, nave, aisles and transepts, organ chamber, and tower and spire 130 feet high: it is built entirely of stone: the wall stones are Bradford parpoint, with Dunhouse dressings; the relief arches of the windows are composed of Dunhouse and Corsham Down stone: the spire rises from a lantern of octagonal shape, the mullions of which are of Penrith red sandstone: the tracery and gurgoyles are elaborately carved: the capitals of the pillars, the arches, and all the interior dressings, are of fine cream coloured Bath stone: the bases of the pillars of Corsham Down, and the pillars themselves, corbel shafts, and arch bands of red sandstone: the pulpit and the font are of Caen stone, with marble and alabaster shafts, moulded bases and carved capitals: a very handsome stained glass window (by Clayton and Bell, of London), consisting of five lights, with rich and elaborate tracery, fills the east end of the chancel, and is a memorial window to the mother and two members of the family of the donor, Timothy Crosby, esq., solicitor, and to Messrs. Faber and Wilson, with whom he served his articles: the roof of the nave, aisles and transepts, and aisles of the church are paved throughout with mosaic encaustic tiles. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Durham, May 11th, 1868, from which year the register dates. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £420, with residence, in the alternate gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham, the presentation of the first vicar having been made by the Crown at the recommendation of the Bishop, and is held by the Rev. Thomas Law, who was for several years curate of the parish church of Stockton. [Kelly's Directory of Northumberland and Durham (1873), page 185.]
