Church

The Church is a plain stone structure, which was rebuilt about the year 1728, on the site of the former church, whose materials were chiefly used in the construction of the present edifice. The parish register commences in 1730. The living is a perpetual curacy, a peculiar of the dean and chapter of Durham, and pays no first fruits or tenths. The parish is free of tithes, except a portion of Cold Rowley and Muggleswick, which produces about £34 per annum: the remainder of the income of the living is derived from farm-rents in the parish. A carved wooden plaque near the entrance to the church reads:

THE LIGHTING IN THIS CHURCH
WAS INSTALLED IN MEMORY OF
EDWARD GUY OF BANKFOOT
WHO DIED OCTOBER 24th 1950

A brass plate by the altar rail reads:

To the Glory of God the East
Window, Reredos, and Sanctuary
panelling were presented by
Utrick A. and Annie Ritson of
Muggleswick Park A.D. 1898 and 1911

Gateshead Observer 16/6/1855 MUGGLESWICK:- PRESENTATION OF A TESTIMONIAL - A most agreeable evening was spent at Muggleswick, on Monday, the 11th inst., when a few friends met to offer a testimonial of respect and affection to the Rev. John Gibson M.A., perpetual curate of Muggleswick, on the eve of his departure for Blanchland. The presentation was instrumentally made by Mr. Moffatt, of Low Muggleswick, who, after a feeling and truthful speech, handed to the reverend gentleman a handsome gold watch and chain, together with a set of silver articles of considerable worth and of great beauty, to be kept by him in token and in remembrance of the esteem in which he was held by his late parishioners. The gentlemen who were invited to be present on the occasion were the churchwardens, the schoolmasters, the parish clerk, the overseers of the poor and of the highways, the tenants of the reverend gentleman, the principal tithepayers, the committee who had collected the subscriptions and selected the articles for the presentation (at Messrs. Reid & Sons, Newcastle), and two or three of the neighbouring farmers. After the usual toasts and speeches, the company separated with that melancholy pleasure which is ever experienced on such an occasion.
