Church

Christ Church is an ecclesiastical parish, formed December 7, 1875: the church, in Ryhope road, built in 1862-64, at a cost, including site, of over £6,000, is a cruciform edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, from designs by Mr. Murray, of Coventry, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, transepts, north porch, and a tower at the north-east angle, with spire, reaching a height of 150 feet, and containing one bell: after being for some years a chapel of ease to St. Micahel's it was consecrated as the church of a new parish in 1875 and affords sittings for 800 persons. The register dates from the year 1875. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £682, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1914 by the Rev. Arthur McCullagh M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, hon. canon of Durham and surrogate. The vicarage house stands in the cloisters. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 455.]
