St. Stephen's, Ayres Quay, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed August 27, 1878, from the parishes of Bishopwearmouth and St. Andrew's, Deptford: the church, in Anne street, erected in 1878, at a cost of £7,711, chiefly contributed by employers of labour in the parish, is a structure of brick in the Lancet style, consisting of chancel and nave; beneath the chancel is a room of the same dimensions used as a vestry and Sunday school: a reredos was erected in memory of the men connected with this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1878. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1924 by the Rev. Joshua Powell Parry M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 456.]
