St. Margaret's church, Castletown, built in 1874, at a cost of £2,500 by the late Col. C.J. Briggs, in memory of his parents, is a small but picturesque edifice of brick with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, and a bell-cote containing one bell: the tracery of the east window is a facsimile of that of the east window in the ancient private chapel of Hylton Castle: the north window is also stained, and there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1874. The living is a vicarage, net income £33, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1919 by the Rev. Hubert Edward Clark, of the London College of Divinity. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 296.]
