Church

DEPTFORD is an ecclesiastical parish, formed November 21, 1844, out of Bishopwearmouth. The church of St. Andrew, erected in 1841, from designs by Mr. Thomas Moore, architect, of Sunderland, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays and aisles: in the chancel is a stained window, presented by the late James Harthley esq.: there are 1,200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1843. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £430, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1909 by the Rev. Henry Jordan Cheeseman B.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), pages 455-56.]
