Church

St. Cuthbert's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed November 26, 1880: the church, in Hamilton street (formerly a Presbyterian chapel), was converted to its present purposes and consecrated in 1880, at a cost of nearly £1,000, and is a plain building of stone, affording 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1880. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £445, in the gift of the vicar of Monkwearmouth, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Henry Taylor Lovejoy L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 456.]
