Church

St. Hilda's, Millfield, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1904 from Bishopwearmouth: the church, at the corner of Chester and Westbourne roads, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, erected as a memorial to Bishop Lightfoot, from designs by the late Mr. William Hicks, and consists of choir, nave and transepts: the church has an open air pulpit. The register dates from the year 1894. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £390, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and hled since 1909 by the Rev. Frederick Matthew Plummer M.A. of Christ's College, Cambridge. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 456.]
