Church

St. Mark's, Millfield, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed March 31, 1868, out of Bishopwearmouth and Deptford St. Andrew parishes: the church, occupying a commanding site in Hylton road, and consecrated April 30, 1872, is an edifice consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, transepts, organ room and vestry, and a bell-cote on the western gable containing one bell: several of the windows are stained, and there are 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1872. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £420, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1922 by the Rev. Thomas Romans M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, who is a surrogate. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 456.]
