Pallion is an ecclesiastical parish, formed March 31, 1868, out of St. Andrew's, Deptford: the church of St. Luke, one of the churches erected for the four districts created under the "Bishopwearmouth Rectory Act, 1867," was built in 1873, from designs by Mr. J.P. Pritchett, architect, of Darlington, at a cost of £4,902, and is an edifice of stone, in the Frech Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays and aisles, and a tower with spire containing one bell: there are sittings for 450. The register dates from the year 1873. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £379, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1910 by the Rev. George Frederick Courtenay B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 456.]
