Church

The church of St. Paul, erected in 1870, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, south transept and a tower containing a clock and 6 bells, presented by the late Mr. John Gibson, in memory of his wife: the oak pulpit and brass eagle lectern were the gift of Col. Challoner, in memory of his wife: there are stained memorial windows in the transept to the late Capt. Dale, William Taylor esq. John Abbs esq. and Miss Mallam; one at the west end to W.N. Taylor and J.T. Reid esqrs. another at the east end to Capt. and Mrs. Hill and one to Mrs. Morris: in 1924 a stained glass window was erected in memory of 2nd Lt. A.G. Bell M.C., who fell at the battle of Arras, 1917: there are sittings for 420 persons. The register dates from the year 1827. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £426, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Percival Young Knight M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge, and chaplain to the Sunderland Mental Hospital. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 335.]
