St. Peter's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed March 31, 1868: the church, in Cumberland street, built in 1872 at a cost of about £4,000, is an edifice in the Gothic style, from designs by Mr. G.A. Middlemiss, architect, consisting of nave of five bays, aisles and a tower at the south-west angle with spire: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1872. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1914 by the Rev. Algernon Silva White M.A. of St. John's College, Manitoba and Trinity University, Toronto. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 455.]
