St. Thomas's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed November 21, 1844: the church, in John street, erected in 1829, at a cost of £6,000, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles: the organ was erected in 1869, and there are several stained windows: the interior of the church was completely renovated in 1883, at a cost of £4,648, and in 1905 marble steps and a mosaic floor were laid down in the chancel: the church affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1848. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £433, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1914 by the Rev. George Wilson Froggatt M.A. of Durham University, and surrogate. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925) page 455.]
