Church

The Venerable Bede's is an ecclesiastical parish, formed May 16, 1873: the church, near the Newcastle road, was built by subscription, at a cost of £4,000, and consecrated August 4, 1870; it is in the Early style of Frech Gothic, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, vestries, organ chamber and a north porch: the carved oak and gilt reredos was provided by public subscription as a memorial to the men of this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18: there are sittings for 500 persons. The registers date from the year 1873. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £385, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Monkwearmouth, and held since 1924 by the Rev. Osbert Mordaunt Burrows M.A., B.D. of St. Chad's College, Durham. [Kelly's Durham Directory (1925), page 457.]
