Church

Brinkburn Priory founded for Augustinian Canons by William Bertram I of Mitford about 1135. After the dissolution the priory passed into lay hands and a house was established on its site. The church remained in use but began to decay and regular services lapsed in 1683, although burials continued. Restoration was carried out in 1857 for the Cadogan family by Newcastle architect Thomas Austin. After the house ceased to be occupied and the church again became disused it was placed in the guardianship of the State. The whole building is a superb example of the transition to northern Early Gothic architecture. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 94.]
