Church

The chapel of SS. Philip and James is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle and a belfry containing 2 bells: the lower part of the west front of the church, the chancel arch and a considerable part of the north and south walls are Norman work, dating probably from the time of Henry I. (1100-35), as does a grave cover, now placed within the chancel rails: there are two monuments in the church to members of the Salkeld family, who owned the place from 1620 to 1705, and some later monuments: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the yeat 1769. The living is a vicarage, held jointly with that of Rennington. [Kelly's Directory of Durham and Northumberland (1890), page 1025.]

Stained windows in the church are dedicated to :

Robert Carr Bosanquet 1871-1935
Ellen Sophia Bosanquet 1875-1965

Charles Ion Bosanquet 1903-1986
Barbara Schieffelin Bosanquet 1906-1987
