Church

The church, designed by W.S. Hicks in the Late Decorated Style, stands on the site of former Norman and Saxon churches. Some features of the Norman church have been retained including the porch doorway and chancel archway and the font. The tower, simple but massive, forms a landmark for miles around. The stained glass east window is the village memorial placed there in 1921. A small window in the south transept is by the well-known stained glass artist, Kemp. The church includes some richly carved screens and panelling and a beautiful chancel roof decorated with symbols of the Passion. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 99.]
