Church

The Church of the Holy Cross is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of nave of four bays, aisles and a western belfry containing one bell; the stained east window is a memorial to Allan Wilkie, of Hetton, d. Feb. 2, 1836, and there are others erected by the parishioners and friends to Algernon 4th Duke of Northumberland K.G., to the Rev. Joseph Cook M.A. 43 years vicar, and to the Rev. Matthew Burrell, also for 25 years vicar here: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1713. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £456, net yearly value £403, with house, in the gift of the Duke of Northumberland K.G. and held since 1871 by the Rev. Henry Edward Bell B.A. of University College, Oxford. [Kelly's Directory of Durham and Northumberland (1890), page 744.]
