Church

The parish church of St. Mary is a plain stone built edifice, rebuilt in 1765, near to the site of the old church, was enlarged in 1835, and 500 additional sittings were obtained; it has 700 sittings, of which 433 are free and unappropriated for ever; it has a square embattled tower, containing 1 bell and clock, which was erected in 1856, the expenses of which were defrayed by public subscriptions; the interior consists of nave, or body without aisles, has side and end galleries, convenient vestry, and contains a small library presented by the late archdeacon Bowyer, in 1825; over the communion table is a large painted window, erected in 1835 by the late Miss Haigh; there is a tablet to the memory of the late Rev. William Haigh, M.A., who faithfully discharged the duties of vicar of the parish for 31 years. The register dates from the year 1692. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £460, with handsome residence, in the patronage of the Crown, and held by the Rev. John Samuel Green, M.A., of Christ's College, Cambridge.
