The church of St. Andrew is an ancient cruciform stone structure; it has chancel, nave, aisle, transepts, chapel, and square tower with embattled parapet at the west-end of the structure, containing 3 bells and a clock: the chancel was completely restored in the summer of 1857, and the remainder of the nave is separated from the aisles by Pointed arches, supported by octangular columns having plain capitals. The church was re-seated and restored in 1868. There is an organ. The register commences in the year 1657. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £482, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and held by the Rev. Frederick Gipps, M.A., of University College, Oxford. A cemetery, with two gothic mortuary chapels, was laid out in 1871; the area is about two acres. [Kelly's Directory of Northumberland and Durham (1873), page 508.]
