Dilston was once the residence of the Radcliffes, Earls of Derwentwater, and the remains of the ancient mansion may still be seen: on the attainder of James, the last earl, who was beheaded on Tower hill in 1716 for his share in the rebellion of 1715, the estates were confiscated by the Government, and granted to the Royal Hospital at Greenwich; Charles Grey Grey, esq. is the agent, and resides on the estate. The chapel formerly attached to the family mansion is still entire. [Kelly's Directory of Durham and Northumberland (1873), page 508.]
