The church was built during the incumbency of the Rev'd H.S. Stephenson, Rector of Allendale 1900-1908, as a daughter church to St Cuthbert's, Allendale. It is a simple 'mission type' building with no outstanding architectural merit. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 46.]
