St. Mark's chapel of ease, situated at CARR SHIELD, was erected by Mrs. Beaumont and others in 1822, for the convenience of the mining population of the neighbourhood, and is a building of stone consisting of nave, west porch and north vestry: there are 100 sittings. The Rev. Joseph Ellis B.A. curate of Ninebanks, officiates here. [Kelly's Directory of Durham and Northumberland (1890), page 700.]
