The present building consisting of chancel and one bay of nave is all that remains of the old parish church built in 1813. The stones of the remainder of the church and tower were used in the construction of the new church. The registers date from 1612. It is uncertain whether St John's stands on the site of the original church. The list of Rectors begins in 1180 with Robert de Quitfield, which confirms the existence of a church at that time. The Whitfields ruled the area for over 600 years; yet there is neither monument or any relic of that family in the church. What remains of the building is good.
