Newcastle Courant 7/1/1848 A Pig was killed at Gosforth Colliery, on Monday last, fed by Mr John Snowball, engineman, only 15 months old, which weighed the enormous weight of 40 stones 3lb. Another of the same litter was killed at the same place, a month ago, and weighed 33 stones 10lb. They were bred by Mr Summers Boggon, Long Benton, and got no other than a common cottagers feeding.
Gateshead Observer 14/9/1850 Mr. W. Brown, of Kenton Lodge, lately pulled a white globe turnip, weighing 14½lb, and measuring in circumference 26½in.
